Concert Information

Eligibility to Perform

  • Singers must attend the required number of rehearsals or pass a Concert Specific Audition (CSA) to be eligible to perform.

  • Attendance at the final rehearsal on the day of the concert is mandatory.

Punctuality

  • Please arrive early for both the afternoon rehearsal and concert. Late arrivals may result in ineligibility to perform.

Security

  • Security can be a concern at Gloucester Cathedral as it is open to the public during our rehearsal. Singers should keep valuables with them or, preferably, leave them at home.

Chapter House

  • The Chapter House is available between the rehearsal and the concert for changing. It is locked during the concert so you can leave coats and bags in there. It is also used by the orchestra, who change there, and for setting out for the party, so be prepared for it to be busy.

Concert Dress

  • Our dress code is gender neutral. Standard concert dress is “All Black”

    • Black, long-sleeved top paired with either long black trousers or an ankle-length black skirt. Black shoes.

  • Jewellery, if any, should be discreet and non-reflective.

  • A small black handbag may be brought on stage.

  • Red choir folders are used for all concerts. Singers will be notified of any exceptions.

  • To accommodate those with allergies, please avoid perfumes, strong aftershave, hairspray, and similar products.

Concert

  • Concerts commence at 7.00pm

Stage Procession

  • Singers line up in performance order in the north and south transepts at 6.45pm before processing on stage.

  • Carry folders in your right hand, by your side, with the spine facing up.

On Stage Conduct

  • Remain standing until all singers are seated. Sit together on the cue of the Concert Manager. After that, unless told otherwise, stand and sit with the leader of the orchestra. For non-orchestra concerts, stand together when the conductor appears from behind the pulpit.

  • Act professionally

  • Talking is strictly prohibited.

  • Face the conductor at all times.

  • Water bottles are not permitted.

  • If there is an interval, leave the stage in reverse order. At the end of the interval, marked by some loud organ chords, please return to the transept and line up again to go onto stage.

  • At the end of the performance, sit when the orchestra sits.

  • Applaud only when seated to avoid the impression of applauding ourselves.

Please follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and professional concert experience for all involved.

After the concert

  • On leaving the stage, please put your music in the boxes provided at either side of the stage. Please don’t take it away with you.

  • There is a usually a party in the Chapter House after the concert for members and their guests. Please bring some ‘finger food’ and leave it on the tables in the Chapter House before the concert. Alcoholic and soft drinks are available with a suggested donation towards the cost.
